#rpDetroit Speaker Peter Hammer: Structural racism is our generation’s civil rights challenge
Peter Hammer was named the A. Alfred Taubman Professor of Law at Wayne State University Law School in fall 2018. He has taught at Wayne Law since 2003 and is the director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne Law. This Center is dedicated to promoting the educational, economic and political empowerment of under-represented communities in urban areas and to ensuring that the phrase "equal justice under law" applies to all members of society.
What message do you want to share at re:publica Detroit?
Structural racism is our generation's civil rights challenge. Detroit is ground zero of spatial-structural racism. We are the new Selm and need to act with that awareness and intentionality in the fight.
In one word, what does access mean to you?
Access = Justice.
What are you looking forward to most at re:publica Detroit?
Being relevant and respectful in Detroit.
